Late eighteenth century mother of pearl patch box.

This finely decorated mother of pearl patch box was produced towards the end of the eighteenth century. Although its country of origin is uncertain, it is most likely to be France. Patch boxes were designed to hold the felt or silk “Beauty spots” that concealed blemishes in the skin and were in frequent use throughout this period. This exquisite box is profusely decorated with designs etched into the mother of pearl, only the base being left blank, and has the original owners initials engraved on the top. The original eighteenth century mirror is set into the lid, the silvering detatched. The box is beautifully contstructed in unmarked metal mounts (Tests positive) and has a cased hinge typical of the period.

This charming eighteenth century mother of pearl patch box stands 2.75cm high. It is 7.2cm wide and 4.2cm deep. (Measurements approximate) It is in excellent condition, showing wear appropriate to its age. It has no damage and no restoration.
