A Fine Early Eighteenth Century Mother of Pearl Snuff Box.
This stunning oval box was produced in the first part of the eighteenth century. The panel was carved in China and is of thick, lusterous mother of pearl. It is likely to have been set as a snuff box in Europe, though the silver mount bears no marks but the design of the box and hinge in particular would denote a western maker of around 1730. The image on the pearl is of two dragons, each delicately detailed, the carving following the natural flow and undulations in the pearl, the eyes drilled to give them depth.
This superb eighteenth century snuff box is 7.7cm long, 6cm wide and stands 1.3cm high. (Measurements approximate). It is in excellent condition, showing only light wear appropriate to its age and substance. It has no damage and no restoration.
