A silver Arts and Crafts movement box. Birmingham 1904.
This stunning little box was made by J. Aitkin and Son of Spencer Street, Birmingham and assayed there in 1904. Its design may be regarded as the epitome of Arts and Crafts silversmithing, from its cabriole legs and spade feet, the intricate decoration of the hinges and the natural matrix turquoise set into the centre of the lid. The silver is of a light gauge, making the survival of this box in good condition all the rarer. The box retains its original high quality soft gilding to the interior and is further decorated with selective light planishing to the exterior surfaces.
This beautiful little box is 8 cm wide, 4.5 cm deep and stands 2.5 cm high. (Measurements approximate). It is in fine condition, showing signs of light wear and use appropriate to its age and substance. It is in original condition throughout and has no restoration.
