Description

Rare mid – late nineteenth century lacquer netsuke in the form of a Mokugyo.

This superb netsuke is an example of tsuishu, three layer carved lacquer, an intensely difficult and complicated manner of production. It is modelled on a mokugyo, a hand held drum, used to accompany chants in Taoist and Bhuddist ceremonies. In this example, the handles are modelled as the heads of Dragons and the sides decorated with pine and blossom. Under close inspection it is possible to detect where the finest cutting implements have been used to shape the surface of the lacquer.

This stunning lacquer netsuke is 4cm wide, 2cm deep and stands 3cm high. (Measurements approximate). It is in excellent condition showing only light wear appropriate to its age and substance. It has no damage and no restoration.
