Description

Napoleonic scratch carved snuff box. c. 1810.

A fine and extremely rare box, this item was made and carved in the first years of the nineteenth century. Taking the form of a book, this box is carved with various symbols, Imperial eagles, a sword with honours and Napoleons hat. Set with a mother of pearl cartouche into which is carved “N” for Napoleon, which also appears on the spine of the book together with a radiant star. It is likely that the box was carved by a soldier in Napoleon’s army. Unfortunately we have no record beyond the box itself to know more, but the standard of the carving would suggest someone who was familiar with the techniques necessary to produce such an item. The box has superb colour and patina and real historical presence.

This rare and interesting box is 9.5cm long, 5.5cm wide and 1.75cm deep. (Measurements approximate). It is in excellent condition, bearing only signs of wear appropriate to its age and substance. It has no damage and no restoration.
