Late eighteenth century Negoro lacquer netsuke.

This exceedingly rare and fine netsuke was produced in Japan at the end of the eighteenth or beginning of the nineteenth century. It is made of carved wood, painted according to the Negoro technique (several layers of red over black lacquer). It has inlaid pupils and gilt teeth and is in the form of a Kara Shi Shi. Shi Shi dogs are shown with their mouths open or closed. Open, to scare away evil demons, or closed to keep good spirits in.

This charming hand carved and lacquered netsuke is of the Edo Period. It is 4.6cm wide, 3.75 cm top to bottom and 2.5cm deep. (Measurements approximate). It shows wear appropriate to its age and substance. It has no damage and no restoration.
