Description

Late Edo – Early Meiji Period wood netsuke. Karako and rattle.

This exquisitely carved wooden netsuke was produced in Japan in the mid part of the nineteenth century. It is a charming subject, showing a karako (baby or young child) crawling across the floor clutching its rattle. The subject was clearly keenly observed by the Artist, though it appears to be unsigned, which was not uncommon at this period. The quality of the carving from the details of the face and hair through to the tiny hands and feet, is outstanding and the netsuke has a very pleasing colour and patination.

This charming mid nineteenth century carved wood netsuke is 3.9cm long, 2.9cm wide and stands 3cm at its highest point. (Measurements approximate). It is in excellent condition, showing only light wear appropriate to its age. It has no damage and no restoration.
