Edo Period carved wood netsuke. Mask Maker. c. 1800.
This fine and beautifully carved netsuke was produced in Japan in the early part of the nineteenth century. It shows an Artisan creating a Noh theatre mask, holding his carving tool in one hand and the mask in the other. He sits on a neo rectangular mat that has lightly carved decoration to the base. This extremely tactile netsuke has a wonderful colour and patination and retains clear detail in spite of its age and use.
This superb Edo Period hand carved wood netsuke stands 3.5cm high and is 3cm at its widest point. (Measurements approximate). It is in excellent condition, bearing light wear appropriate to its age and use. It has no damage and no restoration.
