This fine hand carved wooden netsuke was produced in Japan in the middle of the nineteenth century. It is of the Meiji Period (1868-1912) and is carved to a very high standard. The eyes of the wolf are inlaid polished horn, giving them life and sparkle. It was traditional in feudal Japan, that criminals were often beheaded. Their heads were left outside for the wolves to feed on, needless to say, this was an excellent deterrent. Since at this period Samurai were often used to enforce the law, this motif for netsuke became particularly popular with many of the warriors.

This fine early Meiji Period carved wooden netsuke stands 4cm high and is 4.5cm at its widest point. (Measurements approximate). It is in excellent condition, having fine colour and patination and showing only light wear appropriate to its age. It has no damage and no restoration.
