A Fine eighteenth century Staffordshire Enamel Bougie box

A fine eighteenth century Staffordshire enamel bougie box. c. 1770.

This fine Staffordshire enamel bougie, or candle box was made towards the end of the eighteenth century. Its deep blue ground colour broken by raised gilt decoration and vignettes showing beautifully executed pastoral scenes. The box would have originally held a coiled candle, the end of which would have emerged from the top to light your way to bed., later variations on the design being known as “Go-to-beds”. This example is in superb condition, showing appropriate wear to the plain white enamel on its base.

This delightful late eighteenth century bougie box is 5cm in diameter and stands 4.5cm high including the raised collar to the centre of the lid. (Measurements approximate). It is in excellent condition, showing only light wear appropriate to its age and substance. It has no damage and no restoration, save a possible touch of regilding on the handle edges mentioned only for the strictest accuracy.
